Good Morning;It is early, but I promised to have a wiki created to help you manage the information as well as the documents you are attempting to create this summer as we work together for Zephyr Electric. As we noted last night in our discussion, there are going to be some bumps or challenges, but this is not an insurmountable issue. It merely takes time for us to take things by the proverbial "horns" and make sure that our goals are achieved. There are certainly a number of things to learn from our experiences.
First, I am going to import some widgets as well as add somethings so that most of this can be managed within this site. There are some things that will need to occur in BOLT because there are other interns this summer who are not working with the four of you. This is an important thing; on the other hand, while it will be important to reflect on the issues that are happening here at Zephyr (be it "Zephyr-south" in Atlanta, "Zephyr-central" in the infamous office, or "Zephyr-virtual", which is this wiki, BOLT or through out texts and whatever else is needed to manage this chaos that I am working to organize - and then I guess it will be organized-chaos).
Second, I do believe there are a number of opportunities here and I am going to work specifically on this home page as a way to offer ideas and suggestions. The other pages, and there will be two primary pages, as well as a calendar to help us manage the tasks regardless of what happens in the office.Finally, if we use the wiki judiciously, you can work together even when you are not together. This is where I do believe that you will actually get the most effective work done. I do want you to keep a journal and a log of the time you spend outside of class. This will be important for the credit you will receive and, Samie, in your case, it will be a way in which I can keep track of your work and provide a better reference for you down the road.
Again, thanks for your perseverance and humor in all of this.
If you have not accepted the meeting for Thursday at 1:00 p.m., please do so. I think Jordan is the only one to do so at this point. I think I have Skype addresses for both Hilary and Samie, but need them for Katy and Jordan. I will try to have you added to Skype yet today, so you should get something in your email about me. Please remember to do the appropriate reading as noted in BOLT for this week as well as doing the discussion board. I will be commenting on the discussion boards I have already reviewed later today.
I do have pay envelopes for you from Ed and will get those to you when I return to Bloom next week. Let's plan to meet in person next week on Thursday, which will be the 27th, at 1:00 p.m.. If that time does not work for you, please let me know and we can always add you by Skype also. This coming week you should have done some significant and focused research on what you are attempting to create: That being said, I will be adding some URLs here to support that research. So . . . Katy, again, I am looking for specific grant possibilities (you should also check with the research and grant office here at the university). There is a new person in charge of grant and research at the graduate level (It is Dr. Robert Gates). However, there are undergraduate research grants too. So please check the university web site for that and I would encourage you to set up an appointment with Jerold Harris (here is the URL for the university (http://www.bloomu.edu/research_programs).
As far as a Non-Profit Business Plan, everyone should be doing some work on researching that. Please put any information you find on that particular wiki page here in our site. I will also do some work on that between now and Thursday.
Hilary and Samie, do you have some sort of PowerPoint or something you can provide me to show what you did for the group last week when I was at the orthodontist? I think we should probably have some education people work with us on age-appropriate documents so our media kits will not only look good, but be usable (Jordan, the usable is where you will come in because I want to try to do some usability study on what we create). Hilary and Samie, I think it would be good to have the three of us Skype to come up with a game plan for your media kits and, if need be, I think there are two things we need to consider. First, how do we write a media kit or promotional materials that would convince schools and teachers to work with us? And second how do we create materials that would work in the different age groups. I would like you both to work on those things and really focus on those things.
This means I am going to have Katy and Jordan focus on the business and grant process. This is, in some ways similar to what we work doing in the infamous office. BTW, I will see Megan later today and she did ask me to greet all of you.
I will be back in Bloom next Thursday, the 28th. I have meetings that morning, but I would like to meet face-2-face again that day, so if you can come up with a time that works best for you all, I will schedule around you.
